Abstract
LIS integrates the clinical laboratory with the medical staff and most departments of a health care organization. Because LIS commits an organization to formal policies and procedures, a harmonious relationship among all parties is essential.
The computer has a profound impact on the structure, function, and management of the clinical laboratory. The microcomputer has-••• revohitfonizea- speciirieri- •trackiilg through bar-coding and has improved specimen analysis through the application of process control and application of mathematics.
Patient demographics and orders can be received automatically by instruments then the results are returned to the LIS. The practical experience has shown that improvements in the performance of a laboratory are essential to correct problems and bring about enhanced service.
When the decision to purchase a new LIS is made, the frrst step is to write specifications for the LIS.
