Abstract
Sourour, Hala Tawfik, Gender Differences In Request Speech Act:
A Contrastive Sociolinguistic Study of Standard American and the Variety of the Educated Cairene. Unpublished Doctor ofPhilosophy dissertation, Ain-Shams University, Faculty of Al-Alsun, 2000.
The research is a sociolinguistic study that aims at . investigating the influence of gender on directness and politeness in the request acts performed by educated Am. and Eg. Cairene male and female native speakers.
The study of genderlect in Egyptian and American communities is of major importance to the fields of inter cultural communication in general and teaching language in particular.
The only instrument used to collect data is a
questionnaire that managed to collect 2461 responses.
The results are reached out by analysing the elicited requesting acts of Cairen e Egyptian and American males and females respectively. To measure the levels of directness/ indirectness, syntactic patterns, and strategy types are analyzed quantatitively and qualtitively. Requestive and referential strategies, internal modifiers, and supportive moves are examined as indicators of politeness/impoliteness. Results shown in both chapters are substantiated by tables and figures.
Comparison is drawn between Cairene Egyptian and American males on the one hand, and between Cairene Egyptian and American females on the other hand .
The study concluded that "questioning the possibility that act A be performed by H" is the main convention of means used in the variety of the Educated Cairene to make a request. In .Standard American English, a request is felicitous by "q1,1estioning H's ability or willingness".
