GRAFTS AND IMPLANTS IN RHINOPLASTY

Amr Nabil Rabie;

Abstract

Facial beauty is related to balance and symmetry of different parts of the face, including the nose. The balanced nose, however, must be in harmony with the other components of the face; otherwise it loses its beauty.
It is now generally accepted that both augmentation and reduction should be considered for rhinoplasty and that
reduction, if performed, should be very conservative.
Implant material for rhinoplasty easily modifiable, biologically inert,
unlimitedly available and cheap.
should be firm, soft, long time lasting,
Basically, one can choose between autologous and homologous grafts.
Autologous tissue is the most favorable implant material. They offer the obvious advantage of unsurpassed biocompatibility, but do cause donor site morbidity and can resorb over time.
Cartilage grafts include (septal, concha!, scaphoid or costal). They have a much lower resorption rate than bone. They are soft and pliable and they give a. more natural feel to the nose than bone graft.
Autologous bone (rib, iliac crest, tibia, olecranon, calavarium, ethomoid or vomer) provides a rigid substance with excellent support and can be contoured with a drill. Bone can be used when the deformity is severe .and cannot be corrected with cartilage grafts.
