Medical, Surgical and lnterventional Treatment of Cerebral Ischaemia
Hazem Antar Mashaly;
Abstract
Stroke is one of the most common causes of death in the world, and is the most common life threatening neurological disorder.
Stroke causes about 4 million deathes every year, most of them are in developing coutries.
About 80% of stroke cases are ischaemic. The sevirity of stroke rages from recovery in few days up to severe disability and even death.
Although stroke is considered a disease of the eldery, the
world wide incidence of stroke in young adults is about 9-11
per 100.000 people.
To ahcieve proper diagnosis of cerebral ischaemia, which include TIAs and infarction, many investigations should• be done which include: blood tests, ECG, ECHO these routine
investigations help to diagnose any associating risk factors and, at times, may give clue to the cause of ischaemia, Then other investigations needed include CT brain, MRI, cerebrovascular
ultrasound, and DSA which may show vessel stenosis, • occlusion, plaque morphology, evidence of vasculities or any associated vascular anomalies.
Treatment of cerebral ischaemia includes medical, surgical and interventional (endovascular) measures.
