Synthesis of Some Novel Chelating Agents for Extraction of Uranium and Thorium Ions from Acidic Solutions

Heba Allah Nabil Abdelslam Mohamed;

Abstract

Uranium and thorium are essential elements in nuclear reactors for power generation. One of their natural resources is monazite mineral. Monazite mineral consists mainly of RE (55-60%), Th (5-6%) and uranium (0.2-0.5%) phosphates. The mineral monazite is produced as a by-product mineral component during the physical ore dressing of Egyptian beach black sand deposits for major heavy economic mineral components (zircon, rutile, ilmenite). Processing of monazite mineral by sulfuric acid (as one of two major international applied mineral opening methods) to produce its main components necessitate the purification of produced uranium and thorium concentrates
