Sahar Abd El Azim AbdElAziz;

Abstract

Epilepsy is a common di ,arder in the pediatric age group and requires prolonged treatment with antiepileptic drugs and in some cases these AEDs continue throughout the patient's life. PHT, CBZ and VPA are the most commonly used AEDs. Epilepsy is a multifactorial disorder in which a vq.riety of environmental and genetic factors are implicated. Involvement of the immune system has been suggested in• the pathogenesis of epilepsy.
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of epilepsy and some of the most commonly used AEDs on the humoral and cell mediated immunity.
This study was conducted on forty freshly diagnosed epileptic children aged from 3-15 years, 28 males and 12 females suffering from idiopathic generalized tonic-clonic or partial seizures. All were attendants of Pediatric Neurology Outpatient Clinic, Pediatric Department, Tanta University Hospital.
Diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy was based on clinical grounds, EEG

recording, plain X-ray skull and brain CT scanning.

+ Care was taken to exclude the following:

o Neurological manifestations other than epilepsy. o Isolated single seizure.
o Seizures uncontrolled by the maximum dose of AED monotherapy. o Previous AED medications.
o AED uncompliance.

o Focal lesion demonstrable on brain CT scan or BEG.

o Hemoglobin concentration less than 9 gm%.

o Patients with mal or hepatic disorders.
