Abstract

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a malignant tumor of the skin thought to arise from a hair follicle. It resembles the undifferentiated cells of basal layer ofthe epidermis.

Etiology and risk factors of basal cell carcinoma include:

It has different clinical presentations including: Nodular BCC, pigmented BCC, cystic BCC,
superficial BCC, micronodular BCC, morpheaform BCC, infiltrating BCC and naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

Treatment of basal cell carcinoma is by either medical treatment in the form of: 5-fluorouracil and interferon alfa-2b or surgical treatment in the form of curettage, surgical excision, mohs micrographic surgery, radiotherapy, laser therapy and cryosurgery.

Cryosurgery is an effective modality for treatment of many benign, premalignant and malignant cutaneous lesions through using freezing temperatures to achieve specific effects on tissues.

The mechanisms of lllJury from the freezing of tissue include direct effects on the cells and the vascular
