AGRICULTURAL DRAINAGE WATER MANAGEMENT FOR MAXIMIZING WATER USE EFFICIENCY

Abstract

Egypt has been suffering from severe water scarcity in recent years. The policy of the government of Egypt is to use low quality water to reclaim new lands or blending drainage water with fresh water.
The objective of the research is to reduce the salt loads on conventional drainage network to getwater with a high quality to be suitable for agriculture by changing the depth of the drainage network system. The plant can benefit from it directly in the case of low salinity water or after blending it with fresh water.
The result is advisable to install the drainage network at a depth of 1.0 m, instead of the deep drainage at 1.5 – 2.0 m as used at present time in Egypt. It can be concluded that, the shallower drain depth of tile drainage system (MDS) had an effect on reducing soil salinity at acceptable levels.
The empirical results obtained from the carried out experiments were that the salinity of theaveragesoil profile decreased from second irrigation onward. The salinity of the averagesoil profile for both systems decreased from second irrigation onward.
The soil salinity of (MDS) decreased by (47, 57 and 41 %) for (2nd, 3rd and 4th) irrigation, respectively and (40, 50 and 33 %) for (2nd, 3rd and 4th) irrigationof (CDS), respectively.
The EC values of drainage water of (MDS) decreased by (10.6, 18.2 and 22.7%)for (2nd, 3rd and 4th)irrigation, respectivelyand (6.3, 5.6 and 24.6 %) for (2nd, 3rd and 4th) irrigationof (CDS),respectively.
The calculated hydraulic head values at (L/4, L/2 distance from drain line) for the (MDS) were less than the corresponding values of the (CDS). So (MDS) produces the drainage water with higher quality and lower salts concentration than the (CDS). The flax productivity was 3.5 ton/fed for both systems. It can be recommended to use (MDS) with shallow drain depth.
