IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL EXPRESSION OF Ki-67, CYCLIN Dl AND B1 INTEGRIN IN ORAL PREMALIGNANT LESIONS AND ORAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Iman Mohamed Helmy;

Abstract

This study was conducted to detect immunohistochemically, the correlation between the proliferative activity of malignant cells (in terms of Ki-67 and cyclin D1 expression) and their invasive power (in terms of 1 integrin expression) in different grades of oral squamous cell carcinoma. Also to study the proliferative activity (in terms of Ki-67 and cyclin Dl expression) and the 1 integrin expression in premalignant lesions which are characterized by absence of invasion.

Fifty archival lesions of oral squamous cell carcmoma and premalignant lesions were included in the present study. Using peroxidase-antiperoxidase method for immunohistochemical examination, each lesion was stained with Ki-67, cyclin Dl, and 1 integrin.

For result interpretation, a quantitative assessment of Ki-67 and cyclin D1 antibody expression, but in the case of 1 integrin a quantitative and qualitative assessment were carried out by using the image analysis software (ImageJ, 1.27z, NIH, USA).

Histopathological examination using haematoxylin and eosin stain, revealed that out of 50 lesions included in the present study, 6 were diagnosed as premalignant lesions, 16 cases as WDSCC, 20 cases as MDSCC, and 8 cases as PDSCC.

Broadly speaking, the Ki-67 was positive in 42 cases out of the total 50 cases, cyclin D1 was positive in 21 cases out of the total 50 cases and 1 integrin was positive in 32 cases out of the total 50 cases.
