The Use of Waste Plastic in Hot Asphalt Mixes

Abstract

In this research, two WP materials were used to modify a 4-C surface course HMA. Three methods were used to incorporate the WP into the HMA.
In the first method WP1 was sprayed over the hot aggregate using five percentages ranging from 2 to 10% of weight by bitumen while reducing the bitumen content with the same amount of the added WP1.
The second method was the same as the first method but, the only difference was that the bitumen content was not reduced at all.
In the third method WP1 and WP2 were incorporated to the HMA by adding them to the hot bitumen with five percentages ranging from 2 to 6% by weight of bitumen. The modified bitumen was tested to determine its new characteristics. The conducted tests were rotational viscosity and the softening point.
All the modified mixtures were tested to determine their engineering characteristics to determine the optimum method of incorporating WP into the HMA and the OWPC. The tests included Marshall stability, the indirect tensile
