ASSESSMENT OF THE NUTRITIONAL STATUSAND DIALYSIS ADEQUACY IN CHILDREN WITH CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE

NAHED AHMED MOHAMED MOUSTAFA;

Abstract

The renal failure patients are at risk of nutrient deficiency due to dietary restrictions, anorexia & chronic toxaemia. They are also at risk of vitamin toxicity due to impaired nutrient excretion
• particularly those on regular HD as long-term medication use

combined with poor nutritional intake can exhaust nutritional stores in the dialysis patients.
Our study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status in children with chronic renal failure and its relation to adequacy of dialysis in children under regular HD (both HD patients using either natural cellulose or synthetic polysulfone hemodialzer membranes).
This study was carried in the Pediatric Dialysis Unit of Ain Shams

University Hospitals. It included 3 groups:

• Group (A) formed of 8 patients (5 males and 3 females) with impaired renal functions potting on conservative treatment; their age ranged between 4.5 and 11 years old.The creatinine clearence of these patients was ranged between 4.4 &41 (Mllm).
• Group (B) formed of 30 patients with end stage renal disease undergoing regular HD. These patients were subdivided into two
;, subgroups:

1. Group (BJ:

Formed of 14 patients (8 males and 6 females) with end stage renal disease under regular HD using synthetic polysulfone membrane; their age ranged between 8.5 and 16 years old.
