Abstract


The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of a strategy-training program on developing secondary school students'-skills in using the cognitive and metacognitive strategies and to investigate the effectiveness of a self-instructional program on developing students' listening and reading comprehension skills. So, it was hypothesized
that: .

1- Students who received a strategy-training program would demonstrate greater gains in cognitive learning strategies than students who did not receive such training.

2- Students who received a strategy-training program would demonstrate greater gains in metacognitive learning strategies than students who did not receive such training.

3- Students who received a self-instructional program based on the cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies for developing their listening comprehension skills would demonstrate greater gains than students who did not receive such program.

4- Students who received a self-instructional program based on the cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies for developing their reading comprehension skills would demonstrate greater gains than students that did not receive such instruction.

5- The effectiveness of the program might vary from one receptive skill to the other.
