Bronchoscopy guided vsUltrasound guided percutaneous tracheostomy

Ahmed Khalil Awad El-Bardan;

Abstract

Tracheostomy, as an ancient procedure returning back to around 3000 BC, is one of the commonest techniques performed in the ICU. It is mainly indicated to bypass upper airway obstruction and to help in suction of respiratory secretions. However, difficult weaning and airway maintenance are still remaining the most important indications for tracheostomy. This is to reduce complications of mechanical ventilation that may be mechanical (like ventilator-induced lung injury and air leak syndromes), airway injury (ad glottic and subglottic stenosis) or nosocomial infections (like VAP). There are many controversial results about if it helps in acceleration of weaning or not.
