Abstract

steoporosis is a major public health problem throughout the world. Elderly people are the fastest growing populations in the world and, as people age, bone mass declines and the risk of fractures increases. According to the world health organization, osteoporosis is considered the 10th most important disease associated with the progress of civilization in the contemporary world. Osteoporotic fractures constitute a serious problem, both for the public health and health care system. The consequences of osteoporotic fractures encompass an increased percentage of disabled people in an aging society. It is a major public health problem worldwide because of the associated morbidity, mortality and costs. The gold standard for the diagnosis of osteoporosis is DEXA, The early identification of individuals with low BMD and/or clinical risk factors, accurate diagnosis of osteoporosis and osteopenia, and initiation of appropriate treatment are crucial to reducing the incidence of fractures.
