Mortality rate in patients with Secondary Peritonitis in Ain Shams University Hospitals as regard Mannheim Peritonitis Index (MPI) score
Ramy Ibrahim Abdel Baset;
Abstract
econdary peritonitis is one of the most common and fatal surgical emergencies. Although there is improvement of surgical guidelines, availability of ICU and development of new antibiotics, secondary peritonitis still has high mortality rates ranging from 10%-20% in well-equipped places and may be up to 40% in less equipped places.
The outcome is dependent on not only surgeon’s skills but also on cause of peritonitis, time of presentation, time of intervention and availability of resources.
Because rapid intervention and availability of resources are important factors that affect the outcome of peritonitis, scoring system were developed to provide an objective method for identification of high-risk patients who need rapid intervention and more resources. They also provide an objective method to compare health care provided by different health care centers.
