Evaluation of the Antitumor Effects of Some Fractions Isolated From Cerastes cerastes Viper Venom

Dina Mahmoud Hamed El-Gridly;

Abstract

Snake venoms comprise complex mixtures of proteins,
peptides, neurotoxins, myotoxins, cardiotoxins, hematoxins and
catalytic enzymes. The pharmacological activities of several
venom components have been investigated as a source of
potential therapeutic agents. Snake venoms display profound
anticancer potentials, affecting cell proliferation, migration,
tissue invasion, stimulation of apoptotic activity, inhibition of
angiogenesis, ROS-induced cytotoxicity, in addition to several
other underlying mechanisms to encounter cancer growth. The
mechanisms employed by snake venoms, or their fractions, may
be similar to, or synergistic with, those of the conventional
chemotherapeutic drugs.
