Abstract

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are one of
the most misdiagnosed and mistreated conditions.. It ranges
from slight pain and discomfort to complete loss of function.
Internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint is a
progressive disorder that starts as clicking associated with
normal opening (anterior disc displacement with reduction),
to a stage where clicking gradually ceases but restricted
mouth opening ensues(closed lock). 1
The primary goal in the treatment of TMJ disorders is
to alleviate pain and to restore mandibular function
(mastication &speech).
Treatment of patients with internal derangement of the
TMJ typically begins with nonsurgical treatment modalities.
Occlusal appliance therapy, diet modification,
pharmacotherapy, thermal agents, exercise therapy, physical
therapy, ultrasonography & phonophoresis, electrical
stimulation &iontophoresis, acupuncture, psychotherapy
which have found to be efficacious.
Surgical intervention is typically employed only after
failure of non surgical treatment.
