CERVICAL CYTOLOGY IN LONGTERM PILL-USERS AND NON-USERS
SHAWKY MOHAMED RAGAB;
Abstract
This study was conducted to find out the effect oflong-tenn OC use on cervical cytology by comparing the results of cervical cytology m different duration of usage with that ofnon-users. •
This study was carried out on 200 women attending Al-Menoufyia University Hospitals, the maternity health care units and family planning centres in Shebeen Al-Kom Governorate. 150ofthesewomen were using OCs as the method of choice of their fertility control for different years. The other 50 women were not using OCs, and using IUDs. Women were grouped into four groups:
I- Fifty women used OCs for 2 years.
II- Fifty women used OCs for 4 years.
• lll- Fifty women used OCs for more than. 5 years.
IV- Fifty women who have used IUDs as the method of their fertility control and who have not used OCs.
There are two reasons for choosing the control group IUD users.
The first is that the IUD, like OCs, does not protect the cervix from direct contact with seminal fluid and/or infectious agents. The second reason is that most studies done to study the possible relation between IUDand cervical neoplasia, concluded that there isno evidence of any increased risk.
Allcases included in the study were submitted to the following:
1. Complete historytaking.
2. Thorough clinical examination.
