HISTOLOGICAL STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF AMIODARONE (CORDARON) ON THE LUNG AND THE LIVER OF ALBINO

Abstract


Amiodarone is a very effective anti-arrhythmic drug especially in refractory cardiac arrhythmias that don't respond to the usual anti-arrhythmic drugs. Its effects on the lung and liver have been studied with focusing on the protective role of a tocopherol on such effects.

Ninety adult male albino rats weighing 150-200 grams were used in this study.

The animals were divided into 3 main groups


..,.. Group 1: Control group consisted of 30 rats


..,.. Group II: Consists of 30 rats and was divided into 3 subgroups

Subgroup Ila: 10 rats received a therapeutic loading dose of amiodarone (116 mg/kg/day for 3 weeks then a maintenance dose (29 mg/kg/day) for another 6 weeks.

Sub group lib: 10 rats received the same dose as subgroup Ila then the drug was stopped for 2 months.

Subgroup lie: 10 rats received the drug as before but with 30 mg/rat/day of a tocopherol.
