EVALUATION OF SOME BIOCHEMICAL MARKERS OF BONE FORMATION AND RESORPTION IN POSTMENOPAUSAL OSTEOPOROSIS

Tarek Emam Mohamed Amer;

Abstract

Osteoporosis is one of the most troubling problems affecting postmenopausal females. So, early detection and management is crucial in the perimenopausal era of a female's life as its jate detection makes the disease very difficult to be controlled.
The present study was held to evaluate the sensitivity of some biochemical markers as compared with the bone densitometry in the diagnosis of postmenopausal osteoporosis & to evaluate their role, in the follow up of such cases after hormone replacement therapy and selection of a sensitive biochemical marker for prediction of patients at risk to develop osteoporosis was targeted.
The present study was performed at Department of Obstetric and Gynaecology, Mansoura University on (30) postmenopausal women diagnosed to suffer from decreasing bone mineral density as evidenced by bone densitometry. Several biochemical markers were assessed, including, [serum (zinc, magnesium, calcium, alkaline phosphatase, phosphorus and osteocalcin) and urinary (zinc, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and hydroxyproline)] before and 6 months after hormone replacement therapy. Results were compared with (30) normal healthy
_women not suffering from decrease bone mineral d nsity as diagnosed by bone densitometry serving as a control group.
