EVALUATION OF SERUM NITRIC OXIDE LEVELS IN CASES OF SEPTIC ABORTION

Abstract

Nitric oxide research is now riding on •a crest of enthusiasm. Nitric oxide was Science's "molecule of the year" in
1992. Aspects of nitric oxide research enter into almost all areas of biology and medicine. Perhaps it is the first of a generation of "signaling gases" acting by flipping cellular redox switches rather than on specific receptors. Others may be carbon monoxide and superoxide anion. (Anggard, 1994)

Nitric oxide is an unusual messenger. It is a small molecule composed of one atom each of nitrogen and oxygen. Nitric oxide is an uncharged molecule with an unpaired electron. These characteristics of nitric oxide make it an ideal messenger molecule: Uncharged, nitric oxide can diffuse freely across membranes. With an unpaired electron, it is called a radical molecule, which is highly reactive (having a half-life of 2-30 seconds). (Lowenstein, 1994)

Nitric oxide is synthesized from the amino acid L-arginine via a family of enzymes termed nitric oxide synthases (NOS). Named for the cell type where they were frrst discovered ,there are now three known isoforms.Neuronal (nNOS,NOS1),inducible (iNOS,NOS2) and endothelial (ecNOS,NOS3)-each encoded by different genes.(Johnson & Billiar, 1998)
