Abstract

Abstract
The present work was carried out on two species Mesembryanthemum forsskaolii and M. nodiflorum due to their ethnobotanical capacity. They are collected from Petrified Forest Protected Area of Egypt during three seasons 2014, 2015 and 2016. M. forsskaolii has a variety in phenotypes. The genetic variation was studied using two molecular markers RAPD and ISSR. RAPD was found to be more informative.
The potential of regeneration was studied. Fresh and dry seeds, buds and leaves were applied. The regeneration from fresh seeds was the most effective with mean length 4.05 and 3.45 for M. forsskaolii and M. nodiflorum respectively.
The phytochemical screening of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of wild and callus of two species indicated the presence of the major groups: steroids, unsaturated sterols and/or triterpenes and alkaloids.
These plants are poorly described in terms of their potential of biological activities. The cytological study of water extracts of wild and callus from two species using Allium cepa as plant assay indicated a depression in mitotic index after all treatments. Chromosomal aberrations were stickiness, irregular prophase and spindle disturbance.
