Effect of Designing and Implementing a Teaching Program for Patients Under - going Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery on their Quality of Life
Sahar Yassien Mohamad Abdou;
Abstract
Effect of designing and implementing a teaching program
for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery on their quality oflife.
Background and objective:
Patient education has demonstrated its potential to
improve quality of life. The aim of this study was of three folds, designing, implementing a teaching program and evaluating its effect on the quality of life of patients with coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
Patients and Methods
Sixty patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery who fitted the stated criteria were included in this study conveniently. They were divided into two equal groups (the study and control group), thirty patients for each. The study group was exposed to the designed teaching program, while the control group was not exposed to such experience, quality oflife index scale was measured for both group pre, immediate postoperative and three months after operation.
The results
The study group patients demonstrated total improvement in their quality of life index score (183.1±51.5) preoperatively to (243.5±68.3) three months after operation. A highly statistical significant difference was documented between
study group quality of life index score (243.5±68.3) versus
(201.4± 54.1) for the control group subjects three months after
operation.
Conclusion
The results of this study conclude that subjects who participated in the teaching program demonstrated an improvement in their cognition, and practices relevant to the designed program and quality of life compared with the control group who did not participated in the program, which could shed light on validating effectiveness of the designed program.
