THE EFFECT OF USING A PROGRAM OF CRITICAL READING STRATEGIES IN TRAINING PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS OF ENGLISH ON THEIR ACQUISITION AND USE OF THESE STRATEGIES AND ON THEIR LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE IN READING COMPREHENSION

Abstract
The present study was performed to investigate the effect of using a program of critical reading strategies in training pre-service teachers of English on their acquisition and use of these strategies and on their level of performance in reading comprehension.
Subjects of the present study consisted of one hundred first year English majors ,Faculty of Education , Minia University. They were randomly divided into two groups: the treatment and the non-treatment group. The treatment group received instruction in critical reading strategies while the non-treatment group received no such instruction.
Tools of the study includes : A training program in some critical reading strategies , A test in the Acquisition of Critical Reading Strategies
, A test in the Use of Critical Reading Strategies , A test in Reading Comprehension .The training program involves three strategies : previewing ,reflective reading , and evaluating a text .
The treatment and the non-treatment groups were exposed to pre post means of getting data . The analysis of data using " t" test revealed that the treatment group significantly surpassed the non-treatment group in the post performance of the acquisition and use of critical reading strategies and in reading comprehension.
Discussion of these findings , recommendations and suggestions for further research were presented.
