Environmental Impact of NORM Waste Produced from Iron and Steel Industry, Egypt
Rania Shokry Mohammed Ahmed;
Abstract
This study is established to evaluate the impact of iron and steel industry in Egypt on the public and the environment.
The present study involved five companies (Egyptian iron and steel, Ezz Dekheila, Beshay steel, El Ezz steel and Suez steel) of iron and steel production. Forty-two raw materials samples, eight waste sample and sixty-eight soil samples have been collected inside and around the companies.
The activity concentrations of Ra-226, Th-232 series, K-40 and Cs-137 were determined in all samples using Hyper-Pure Germanium (HPGe) detector. Radiation hazard parameters such as radium equivalent were estimated to evaluate health implication of exposure of the general public to the studied samples.
