Abstract
The ability of the culture filtrate of the recombinant feather - degrading Bacillus subtilis DB100 (pS1) to act on some keratin - containing materials (e.g., feathers, wool, horns, hair, and nails) was tested. Generally, the level of soluble proteins released from the above materials, due to the bioconversion processes was, the highest in reactions contained horns, feathers, and wool, respectively. The level of released NH2 - free
amino groups was in not a good agreement with that of:.soluble proteins.
I i: '
The highest level of released NHZ - free amino groups was achieved in reactions contained nails and feathers followed by hair and wool, respectively. This reflects the selective substrate specificity of the keratinolytic activity of the culture filtrate towards - keratins (e.g., feathers) and some a- keratins such as horns and wool.
