Comparative Evaluation of Two Different Methods for Internal Fixation of Mandibular Body Fractures Using Finite Element Analysis
Mostafa Ezzelarab Ahmed;
Abstract
The stresses induced in mandibles fractured in the body region and fixed by two fixation miniplates schemes were evaluated in this study using finite element analysis.
Rapid prototyping and Stereolithography techniques were used in this study for printed model production using a cone-beam CT scan of a volunteered male patient having a fully dentate mandible with no any obvious abnormalities. Such techniques were implemented for the purpose of precision and accuracy. The printed model of the reconstructed mandible was then used for fracture simulation, placement of the fixation miniplates, insertion and tightening of the screws.
Two models were used in this study in which:
Model I: The mandibular body fracture was fixed by a single four-hole 2.0 mm miniplate; placed at the superior border and just below the root apices of the teeth.
Model II: The mandibular body fracture was fixed by two four-hole 2.0 miniplates; the first one was placed at the superior border, while the second was placed below the inferior alveolar canal just above the inferior border of the mandible.
