Abstract

A study was carried out in Greater Cairo between May and

December 2000. It included 13 geriatric clubs and 17 geriatric homes.

This study used cross-sectional design (retrospective study) which is divided into abnormal cases (< -1 S.D. of BMD) and normal group (>-1
S.D.BMD).

It was planned to examine a total of I972 elderly aging (65 +)of both sexes (720 males and 1252 females).
Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured for all study participants by special quantitative densitometer, acting peripherally on calcaneus bone. BMD was expressed as T-score that represents the number of standard deviations (SD) away from the mean peak bone mass of the young adult Caucasian.
A coded questionnaire was designed for the purpose of the study

assessment. Pre-structured interview questionnaire of information on demographic and socioeconomic assessment, female reproductive history, life style and nutritional assessment.
Overall prevalence of osteoporosis was (8.4%), Osteopinea was (29.9%) within the elderly people in Greater Cairo, i.e.: the prevalence of the Abnormal (osteoporosis with osteopinea) was (38.3%) from the total elderly people in Greater Cairo. Males were more osteoporotic than females (12.6% vs. 6%) and the abnormal males more than the abnormal females (44.7% vs. 34.7%).
Stepwise multiple linear regressiOn analysis showed that age, education, residence (geriatric homes & geriatric clubs), Per capita income, physical activity, sun exposure, drinking tea, smoking, body mass index and drinking milk were the most significant predictors of low bone mass in the whole elderly population in Greater Cairo.
