ASCITIC FLUID INTERLEUKIN-8 IN SPONTANEOUS BACTERIAL PERITONITIS

Abstract


The present study was conducted to detennine the rule of ascitic fluid interleukin-8 (IL-8) in the diagnosis of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (S.B.P.).
Both presence of S.B.P. and absence of any other diseases that may affect ascitic fluid IL-8 were proved by: history, clinical examination and appropriate investigations.
Ascitic fluid IL-8 was measured in 40 patients with cirrhotic ascites,
20 of them have S.B.P and 20 have sterile ascites as control group chosen from In-patient wards of Internal medicine department, Ain shams University hospitals. Ascitic fluid samples were collected and immediately refrigerated until time of use.
Investigations done to all subjects participated in the study were:
-Complete Blood count and E.S.R.
- Liver function tests.
- Renal function tests.
-Serum sodium and potassium.
-Fasting blood sugar.
-Abdominal ultrasonography.
- Ascitic fluid sample for:
* Culture and sensitivity test.
* Cytological examination
* Interleukin-8 determir.ation.
