COMBINED URETHRAL STENT AND SUPRAPUBIC DIVERSION VERSUS URETHRAL SPLINT ONLY IN DISTAL PENILE HYPOSPADIAS REPAIR
Mostafa Shehata El-Sharkawy;
Abstract
Hypospadias is a common anomaly of the external genitalia in newborns, occurring in about l out of every 150 to 250 live births (Paulozzi et al, 1997). It is defined as a congenital defect of the penis, in which the urethral meatus is incompletely developed. This can cause the opening of the urethra to be located anywhere on the ventral surface of
the penis.
Hypospadias repair has many complications as hemorrhage, encrustations and obstruction; urethrocutaneous fistula with incidence of
10 to 15% (Duckett, 1986); meatal stenosis 1% to 18% (Scherz et al.,
1988); persistent chordee; and others.
The aim of this work is to evaluate the results of repair of distal penile hypospadias if we use urethral stent with suprapubic diversion or urethral splint only. Also to compare which of them is better
•
regarding the rate of complications such as urethral fistulae; stricture;
bladder spasm;obstruction;others. Aming finally for the refinement of the currently used hypospadias repair procedures.
In our research patients were divided into two groups:
1-Group (I): Patients who underwent hypospadias repair with suprapubic urinary diversion in addition to urethral stent. This group include 41 patients.
2- Group (II): Patients who underwent hypospadias repair with the urinary diversion depending only on urethral splint which drains urine and acts as a stent for the neourethra .
the penis.
