Hosam El-Din Abd EI-Rahman Hassan;

Abstract

The study evaluated the association between apolipoprotein (a) level and pre-eclampsia and its association with the severity of the disease.
* Study Design :
70 pregnant women in the second half of pregnancy were studied and
classified into 3 groups. Group I included 20 cases of mild pre-eclampsia, group II included 30 cases of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia and group III included 20 cases of normal pregnant women. For all cases of the study liver and kidney functions were measured and urine was tested by dipstick method for proteinuria. Apo (a) level was assayed by RID for all cases of the study. Data collected were statistically analyzed.
* Results :
The mean apo (a) level in patients with mild and severe pre-eclampsia was found to be significantly less than that of the normal control group.
There was no statistically significant difference in apo (a) level between cases of mild pre-eclampsia and case of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.
* Conclusion :
• Apo (a) may be important in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia and it may be useful marker in predicting pregnant women who will develop pre eclampsia or later may develop coronary heart disease.
