Dispersion of biofilm formed by some Gram negative bacteria using microbial by-products

Nessma Mostafa Muhammed Gad;

Abstract

Microbial biofilm is an important virulence factor contributing not only to the severity of the disease but also to antibiotic resistance as well. Biofilms have great significance for public health, as biofilm-associated microorganisms exhibit dramatically reduced susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. Many aspects of biofilms like their resistance to antimicrobial agents, being a persistent source of infection and their ability to exchange resistance plasmids, make their formation a clinically relevant process,
Gram-negative pathogens are particularly important cause of nosocomial infections. They are responsible for more than 30% of hospital-acquired infections, 70% of ICU and approximately 15% of infections in the NICU according to Data from the U.S. National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).
The objective of this study is to Assess the tendency of biofilm formation on highly resistant gram negative pathogens and study the ability of crude extract of Bacillus subtilis on dispersing biofilm formed by these pathogens.
Gram negative isolates were collected from three different hospitals in Egypt, and identified to the species level by Vitek 2 automated system. Antibiotic susceptibility test was done against 13 different antibiotics using Vitek 2 compact system. A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa was reported with the highest resistance patterns
