STUDY ON THE PREVALENCE OF BRONCHIAL ASTHMA IN SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract
There are few data on the prevalence of asthma symptoms among adolescents in Egypt.
The present study aimed studying the prevalence of asthma among secondary school students of age group between 13 to 20 years in four randomly selected districts (Misr El-Gedida, Helwan, Shoubra and Abbassia) using a questionnaire.
The total number of students included in this study was
2321 students, obtained from two schools in each district,
1144 male students (49.3%) and 1177 female students
(50.7%).
A number of 2321 questionnaires were distributed with a response rate of 100%.
The questionnaire included: Personal data (age, sex, address).
It also included data concerning student's father level of education and job, together with his or her mother's job.
The questions concerning bronchial asthma Were asked directly whether the students were previously diagnosed as
' I asthmatic or not, then this was confirmed by responding to questions including asthma symptoms (recurrent wheeze, recurrent cough, chest tightness during night or day).
Also, the questionnaire included age of onset of asthma and the triggering factors of asthmatic attacks. Lastly it
included whether the patients were receiving any medication and its type.
