THE EFFECTS OF CORTICOSTEROID INJECTION VERSUS LOCAL ANESTHETIC INJECTION IN THE TREATMENT OF LATERAL EPICONDYLITIS

Ahmed Nageeb Mohamed Ali;

Abstract

ennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis was first described more than
100 years ago and its etiology and pathophysioIogy were
multifactorial and remain uncertain.
Repetitive micro-traumatic injury at the extensor origin due to
intrinsic over load probably leads to a micro-tear that heals through
fibrosis and granulation tissue production.
The condition represents pathology at the common extensor origin
on the lateral humeral epicondyle.
A patient with lateral epicondylitis will complain of pain at the
lateral side of elbow that exacerbated by participation in any activity that
requires resisted wrist extension.
This study seeks to compare two treatment methods of lateral
epicondylitis: corticosteroid injection and a local anesthetic injection.
30 patients were assigned into 2 groups, CSI group and LAI group.
And they were given injection at the maximum point of tenderness in a
single dose.
The recovery rate was more effective and higher in CSI group
especially at 3-week visit.
CSI has the best short-term treatment results yet a high recurrence
rate.
