Safety Treatment of Hazardous Liquid Waste Using Functionalized Copolymers Prepared by Using Ionizing Radiation

Abstract

1- MeOH/H2o mixture was found to be the most proper
solvent for each monomer, for Acrylic Acid (AAc),
Acrylamide (AAm), vinyl alcohol (VA) it was(70: 30%
wt) while for styrene(sty) it was (80: 20% wt).
2- The optimum gel % obtained at comonomer composition
(50: 50)wt % and at irradiation dose 30KGy which is
called gelation dose.
3- The water uptake of the prepared hydrogels increased
with swelling time, reaching maximum equilibrium of
swelling at 24h. The swelling behavior of PAAm in
distilled water is higher than that for PAAc, PVA and
Psty. The water absorbency of such hydrogels, decreases
in the order PAAm, PVA, PAAc and Psty. The swelling
of copolymers follows the order PAAm/ PAAc> PAAm/
PVA> Psty/PAAc.
4- The water uptake percentage increased with irradiation
dose up to 30KGy and then any increase in radiation dose
leads to decrease in water absorbency due to the increase
