Neima Ahmed Mohamed Hamed;
Abstract
The aim of this study is to identify barriers facing students during application of the nursing process, develop a strategy to overcome such barriers if possible, and evaluate the effectiveness of this strategy.
To fulfill the aim of this study the following research questions were formulated:
1) What are the barriers facing students during the application of the nursing process from their point of view?
2) What are the students suggestions to overcome these barriers?
•• 3) What are the barriers facing students during the application of the nursing process from the teacher's point of view?
4) What are the teachers suggestions to overcome these barriers?
The study sample was composed of 250 randomly selected students from the 10 nursing faculties which are, Alexandria, Cairo, Ein Shams, Asuott, Tanta, Menofiya, Banha, EI-Mansoura, EI-Zagazig and Bart-Said in addition to the university hospitels allover the Arab Republic of Egypt, and 60 volunteered teaching staff members.
The following tools were utilized for data collection:- i) A questionnaire sheet for the students (tool 1)
ii) A questionnaire sheet for the teachers (tool 2)
Concerning barriers which faced students during the application of the nursing process, they were ranked as follows, 1) Lack of medical and nursing staff Cooperation 2) Unavailable facilities and, equipment, 3)Rapid patients' turnover, 4) Unavailable patient's sheet,
5) Patient/student cooperation, 6)Noisy environment, 7)Limited clinical time. 8) Inadequate
teacher's presence in the clinical setting, and 9) the frequency of medical round.
Their suggestions were ranked as, provisition of sufficient supplies and equipment, cooperation of medical and nursing staff, increase clinical time provided for training, the need for teacher's presence in clinical setting all the time, less noisy environment, provide patient's sheet and the last suggestion was related to improve patient's cooperation.
However, the barriers mentioned by the teaching staff were ranked as follows; lack& inefficient equipment and supplies, rapid patients turnover, lack of students' knowledge, limited clinical time, and limited training places. Their suggestions declared their need for conferences and workshops concerning what is up to date in the nursing process, and the need for improving students/staff ratio, as well the presence of adequate, efficient supplies and equipment.
Conc/usion:-
During the application of the nursing process, students were faced by many
barriers that hinder their application. Some of these barriers can not be easily controlled. So, efforts has to be made to overcome these barriers.
