A Comparative Study between Incidence of Occurrence of Electrolytes Disturbance in Post-operative Patients Receiving Total parentral nutrition versus Entral Nutrition
Ahmed Barhoum Abdel Menem Ibrahim;
Abstract
Currently, enteral nutrition is considered the preferred feeding way of the critically ill patient. All patients who are not expected to be on a full oral diet within 3 days should receive EN, and PN should be introduced within 24-48 hours if EN could not be tolerated or contraindicated.
Several studies were performed to compare advantages and disadvantages of enteral and parenteral nutrition. The overall conclusion can be that cost reduction is the most definitive advantage of EN over PN, and although over aggressive EN may be harmful due to the risk of overfeeding, patients who can be fed enterally should receive it.
The aim of this work is to determine the incidence of potassium, magnesium, sodium, calcium and phosphorus
