Transition Zone Index as a Predictor Value for Success of Trial without Catheter in Patients with BPH with Acute Urinary Retention

Khaled Abdel Sattar Gad;

Abstract

A
lot of diagnostic tools are present for assessing the degree of LUTS. Pressure flow studies are invasive and cannot be justified in all patients suffering from LUTS. From here came the clinical importance of searching for another clinical tool, to help in assessing the degree of LUTS.
A successful trial catheter not only delay surgery, but may also avoid it. Failed trial without catheter could be avoided by identifying significant and independent risk factors.
Age, transition zone volume (TZV), transition zone index (TZI), post voiding residual urine (PVRU) and Intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP) are important independent predictors of successful trial without catheter. Identification of values higher than or equal to the cutoff for specific risk factors can predict the failure of TWOC.
