Postnatal Development of the Hippocampus in Male Albino Rats: A Histomorphometric Study

Aya Abdrabo Ali Baraka;

Abstract

Hippocampus has an important role in the process of learning and memory. It also functions as a part of the limbic system.
It represents a curved elevation of gray matter that extends throughout the entire length of the floor of the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle.
The aim of this work was to verify the morphometric and histological development of the hippocampus in the first four postnatal weeks.
Twenty adult female albino rats were used in this work. Every two females (at pro-estrous phase) were caged with one male for a day and next day a vaginal smear was examined for sperms which indicates positive conception (GD zero). Rats were followed till delivery.
