Perioperative Plasma Endothelin-1 Level in Relation to Vasoconstriction During Prolonged Surgery and the Effect of Calcium Channel Blocker

Ahmed Ali El Shebiny;

Abstract

develops during vasoconstriction frequently • Peripheral
prolonged surgery and it may last for several hours after operation.
Endothelin-1, which was first described in 1988, 1s synthesized and secreted by vascular endothelium and is an important contributing to postoperative hypertension..
Endothelin-1 action is t;nediated ultimately through calcium
. , influx through calcium chatmels.
The study was performed on 40 patients aged between 20 -
40 years who were selected to be ASA I attd ASA II undergoing elective prolonged surgety. Twenty patients, as control group, (group 1) were studied regarding endothelin-1 level to different parruneters mean ruterial blood pressure, skin temperature (T-index) to core temperature (T-nasoph.) differences, urine output per hour and heart rate.
The other twenty patients (group 2) received 10 mg nifedipine sublingual after induction of anesthesia and stabilization of •the hemodynrunics to antagonize the effect of endothelin on blood vessels and all parruneter were measured as group 1.
