Evaluation of Management Of Prosthetic Mitral Valve Thrombosis

Mohamed Abdel Basset Mohamed Abdel Rahman;

Abstract

Valvular heart disease affects more than 100 million persons worldwide, and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In the last 50 years, the epidemiology of valvular disorders has drastically changed, with a marked reduction in the incidence and prevalence of rheumatic heart disease and a substantial increase in the prevalence of degenerative valve diseases.
Surgical valve replacement is currently the standard of care for treatment of valvular heart disease in patients at low and inter-mediate risk for surgery.
New heart valves are evolving helping to minimize the risk of thrombogenicity and characterized by increased durability.
Prosthetic mitral valve thrombosis is common among patients who underwent native mitral valve replacement. Multiple risk factors were attributed to thrombosis process. Patients’ poor compliance to postoperative anticoagulation is one of the most important risk factors. In addition multiple preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative factors were related to thrombosis. Mortality among patients undergoing prosthetic mitral valve replacement could be decreased by controlling these factors and minimizing their incidence.
