SELENIUM STATUS IN CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS WITH CARDIAC DYSFUNCTION

Abstract
This study was conducted on 35 patients with different causes of cardiac dysfunction were attending the PICU at children's hospital Ain Shams University. Their ages ranged from 0.16 to 15 years. The study included also 10 apparently healthy age and sex matched subjects as control group. The aim of this study was to estimate the level of glutathione peroxidase enzyme and the active part of it, which is the selenium in critically ill patients with cardiac dysfunction and to evaluate the effects of selenium supplementation to their cardiac states.
The studied subjects were grouped according to the etiology of cardiac dysfunction into:
Group 1: patients with Cardiomyopathy, included 15 patients.
Group II: patients with Toxic myocarditis, included
15 patients.
Group III: patients with Rheumatic carditis, included
5 patients.
And a fourth group of normal subjects serving as control group they were including I 0 subjects.
