Cord Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) as a predictor for early onset sepsis in preterm
Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed Emam;
Abstract
The neonates under study (n = 80) were classified clinically
and laboratory into 2 groups, Group A (Preterms with sepsis = 25
case) and Group B (Preterms with no sepsis= 55 case) regarding
to clinical examination, different CBC parameters, 12h CRP &
blood culture.
Cord blood sample was collected from Group A (Preterms
with sepsis = 25 case) &Group B (Preterms with no sepsis = 55
case) at birth and laboratory examined for thiobarbituric acid
reactive species (TBARS, as a marker of lipid peroxidation).
The average Cord TBARS ranged between 4.2 nmol/ml – 24
nmol/ml with Median 10.50 nmol/ml for sepsis group while the
average Cord TBARS ranged between 0.5 nmol/ml – 17 nmol/ml
with Median 3.00 for control group
