RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GASTRIC AND GALLBLADDER EMPTYING IN PATIENTS WITH NON ULCER DYSPEPSIA POSITIVE FOR HELICOBACTER PYLORI

Abstract

This study aimed to find-out the functional disturbance in the coordination between stomach and gallbladder motility in H. pylori associated NUD and to demonstrate the relationship between clinical presentation and histological picture to the findings.

Thirty patients with functional dyspepsia for at least 3 months and histologically proved H. pylori infection were included in thistudy. Ten non-dyspeptic healthy subjects were taken as control.

All participants were subjected to symptomatic questionnaire, clinical, laboratory evaluation and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with two antral mucosal biopsy for assessment of H. pylori status. In cases, histological grade of gastritis was determined.

Stomach and GB emptying rate was evaluated by real
time ultrasonography afterI 2 hours fasting. A mixed meal of
2 I 0 Kcal was given. Antral surface area and GB volume were
measured at fasting state and every 15 minutes for one hour.

The results of this work indicated that functional dyspepsia is associated with motor abnormality occurring in the stomach and•GB in patients having H. pyloriinfection.

This abnormality is in the form of delayed emptying of both stomach and GB. Not only both are delayed but also their synchronization is lost. The delayed GB emptying may be secondary to delayed gastric emptying or to other functional abnormality associating the condition such as hormonal disturbance.
