Clinico-Pathological Study of Oncological Emergencies

Abstract
This is a retrospective study done in Radiation Oncology Department of Assiut University Hospital among ninety eight patients who developed
oncologic emergencies from 3/2000 till 7/2001.
Patients data were categorized according to the type of oncologic emergency, their diagnosis and treatment.
The incidence of oncologic emergencies was 7% and the most common type of oncologic emergency encountered was neurologic emergences (spinal cord compression and increased intracranial tension), metabolic emergencies, urologic emergencies and superior vena cava obstruction.
Various treatment modalities were used including radiotherapy in
52% supportive measures in 13.26%, surgery in 7.14%, combined modalities in 5.07% and chemotehrapy in 1.02% of patients.
Fifty nine patients (60.2%) have been saved by urgent mnagement and could be survived with good control while 19 patients (19.3%) showed
no response, with death rate of 20.4%.
