Mohamed Atef Ahmad;

Abstract

ABSTRACT
Metastatic tumors are the commonest Tumors of the bone. Wide variety of surgical modalities are available for management of bone metastasis. This review describes functional improvement, pain control, and survival after surgical management of the bone metastasis. Surgical management is found to lead to better pain control and functional improvement, with comparable results of survival rate with other reviews like ours.
Metastatic bone tumors are the most common bone neoplasms. The skeleton is the third commonest site for metastasis, after the lungs and the liver. The most common site for metastasis is the femur, followed by the spine, humerus, pelvis, ribs, and skull, in that order: 80 % of skeletal metastasis originate from breast, prostate, lung, kidney, and thyroid. While prostate and breast cancer are the most common origin of metastasis to the bone, lymphomas and cancer of the lung and kidney are the most common malignancies with a lesion of bone as their first presentation.
