Abstract

Abstract
TRUS-Bx is a standard feasible procedure for histopathological diagnosis of prostate cancer. Although considered a safe procedure, it has its own complications of which some may evolve into critical situation.
Complications of TRUS-Bx include infectious and noninfectious complications. In the last two decades there has been increased incidence of infections complications and reported sepsis cases post TRUS-Bx with increasing rates of post biopsy hospital admission due to the emergence of new strains among normal rectal flora resistant to fluoroquinolones which are the standard prophylactic antibiotics for the procedure.
The current study aimed to define the prevalence of ciprofloxacin resistant organisms among rectal flora in our community and to assess the efficacy of the addition of Povidone Iodine suppository before the procedure to the standard antibiotic prophylaxis in decreasing post biopy infectious complications.
