Abstract


Salmonella form a big family of bacteria that may contain more than

2200 serovars. It comes as the most important single agent for food-borne infections responsible for most of food-borne outbreaks.


It was found that school children are the most affected age by typhoid fever in developing countries. Seasonal variation of salmonella is well known as the highest incidence is during the hot dry months. Giza Governorate represents one of the areas with high incidence rate for typhoid fever, which was 15.2/100,000 in 1996.


A multi-round cross sectional survey study was conducted in Abou

El-Nomros area where a stratified systematic random sample representing

25% of primary school students enrolled in 3 schools were selected.



Students representing the five primary school grades were assigned - m each session- using systematic random technique. Each student participated in 3 sessions where 1 urine & 1 stool samples were collected I session . The same survey was repeated over the 4-calendar seasons.


Along this study period, 5342 urine and stool samples were collected from students, 233 urine and stool samples from school food-handlers and
139 food & water samples.
