Microalbuminuria and carotid artery intima- . media thickness in non- dittbetic and diabetic subjects
Shehata Mohamed Shehata;
Abstract
In this study, 35 type 2 diabetic patients and 35 patients with essential hypertension and a control group of 10 patients were compared as regards intima- media thickness (IMT), and the association of this early marker of atherosclerosis with several cardiovascular risk factors. The results showed that 22 diabetic and
19 hypertensive patients had a high IMT. Diabetics with high IMT
showed statistically significant higher fasting serum insulin
_,
' (P=O.OOl ), higher lipids, rnicroalbuminuria and lower serum albumin (P=OLOOl) when compared to the control group. Hypertensive patients with high IMT showed higher triglycriedes (P=O.Ol.), microalbuminuria (P=O.OOO) and lower serum albumin (P=O.Ol) when compared to the control group.
