Abstract

Preeclampsia is a common disorder of pregnancy and a major cause of maternal, fetal and neonatal mobidity and mortality.

Several abnormalities of calcium metabolism have been described in patients with preeclampsia.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether patients with preeclampsia display abnormalities of urinary calcium excretion compared with chronic hypertensive pregnant patients and normotensive pregnant subjects and to evaluate the relationship between these abnormalities and PTH level.

This study was carried out on 30 pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy, 10 with preeclampsia, 10 with chronic hypertension during pregnancy and 10 normotensive control, matched by maternal age, gestational age and parity. All were hospitalized for both monitoring and treatment purposes and they were receiving similar and normal hospital diet. None received diuretic treatment before or during the study period. None were given corticosteroid treatment for fetal lung maturity enhancement.Women with known preexisting renal disease or diabetes mellitus were excluded from the study .
